Quentin Lee is known for creating riveting films such White Frog and Ethan Mao, which often touch on the themes of personal discovery and the importance of family, but now the acclaimed filmmaker will be on the other side of the camera with REVRY’s forthcoming Original Series, Gay Hollywood Dad – a docu series following Lee through the process of surrogacy, the birth of his son, Casper, and his first year of life.
Lee, who is openly gay and of Asian descent, created the series to show the real-lifestruggle that LGBTQ + parents have to endure to start a family. The episodes capture Lee and Casper at intensely personal moments–from the baby’s birth to preparing for Casper’s 100th day party, shooting a short film with baby in tow, and travelling to Hong Kong, San Diego and Vancouver. Viewers are invited to experience the journey alongside Lee as he becomes accustomed to being a new father in the context of an often grueling Hollywood lifestyle.
Says Quentin Lee
Gay Hollywood Dad’ is a gift to my son Casper who was born of quite extraordinary circumstances… born from surrogacy to a single parent. As a filmmaker, I couldn’t think of a better gift than to document the beginning of our lives as faithfully, realistically and fun as possible… so in the future we’ll both have a record and testimony to our existence.
Gay Hollywood Dad shines a light on the trials and tribulations of being a queer Asian filmmaker in Hollywood as well as the excitement, the stress and the often-confusing circumstance of being a new parent. The added layer of surrogacy, a practice that is widely becoming more financially viable for both the queer and straight communities, creates for an informative and thought-provoking examination of the changing state of parenthood in the 21st Century.
Gay Hollywood Dad will premiere as REVRY’s newest Original Series this November 3rd at Palm Springs Pride before being released exclusively on REVRY beginning November 24th. Watch a clip of Quentin Lee show below
